27 Sentenced to The Clink!
Twenty-seven friends of St John’s ventured ‘behind bars’, so to speak, to enjoy a superb lunch at The Clink restaurant at High Down Prison, Sutton, organised by the Men’s Fellowship group.
The restaurant itself, located within the prison walls, is run by the Clink Charity, which provides the opportunity for offenders to learn skills and gain qualifications in the culinary world, and with the support from several industrial companies, it has been able to continue its work after an enforced covid-break.
Having all gone through various security checks beforehand, including removal of anything which could be misused: mobile phones, some watches, wallets, pens, even tissues (though not a credit card – you have to pay after all!), we were treated to either a two or three-course lunch of exceptionally high quality. It is a credit to the training staff that the trainee chefs can deliver dishes such as scorched mackerel, brisket of beef, and a chocolate tart which would not be out of place in a top-quality restaurant, and the meals themselves were served by an enthusiastic and very pleasant staff. There is no alcohol on sale, but that should not take anything away from what was a fantastic occasion, and everyone left, escorted through the main prison entrance, in very good spirits, many expressing a wish to return again.
The restaurant is gradually opening up with more dates, and this month is re-introducing Sunday lunches, and so, if you wish to experience a top quality meal with excellent service, and at the same time contribute to a charity aimed at reducing the chances of prisoners re-offending by giving them training and qualifications – there is a 12.5% service charge which goes to the charity – go on to their website to book a table: you will not be disappointed: https://theclinkcharity.org
